The history of an institution portends the future & directs its destiny. The Armed Forces Medical College was formed at Pune on 01 May 1948 by the amalgamation of Army Medical Training Centre, the Army School of Hygiene, the Central Military Pathology Laboratory, the School of Blood Transfusion and Army School of Radiology. AFMC when conceived began as postgraduate training and research centre.

Students are required to participate in games, sports and gymnastics. Facilities for sports such as cricket, squash, tennis, hockey, football, volleyball, basketball, handball, table tennis and gymnastics are provided free of cost. Facilities for aquatics also exist on nominal payment.
